* * * BMW is preparing to feature this new DTM racing engine model P48 at the Hockenheimring race in May. The P48 will power their BMW M4 DTM race car. Way back in 1969, BMW won the European Touring Car Championship with the 2002ti. BMW compared the engines from both cars to show what a difference 50 years makes.
BMW M engines were traditionally large displacement naturally aspirated high revving engines, particularly the S85 V10 in the E60 M5 and E63 M6 and the related S65 V8 in the E90 M3. These are the most powerful engines BMW has ever built (not including the BMW S70/2) without supercharging or turbocharging, with an output of 100 HP per liter of displacement, and each has won numerous International Engine of the Year Awards. As late as the early 2000s, BMW regarded forced-induction (supercharging or turbocharging) as low-tech shortcuts to boosting horsepower, stating that this adds weight and complexity while reducing throttle response. BMW purists have noted that while forced induction and/or large displacement does produce more torque for better day-to-day driving, most of them like the “character” and sound of low displacement naturally aspirated engines with high redlines.
At first sight, both P48 and 2002Ti engines have a lot in common. Both are 2.0 liter turbocharged BMW inline four cylinder engines. According to BMW, though, the new engine makes roughly twice the horsepower, with substantially better fuel economy and reliability.
DTM dates back to 1969, and the 2019 season of the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters kicks off at the beginning of May without Mercedes-AMG. Also surprising is that Aston Martin has accepted the challenge, the first non-German entry since Alfa Romeo in 1996.
Gary Paffett took the championship for Mercedes-AMG, but on this occasion, BMW celebrates 50 years of motorsport success by detailing the P48 power unit in the M4 DTM in comparison to the M121 from half a century ago. The Bavarians won the European Touring Car Championship with Dieter Quester and the 2002 TI in 1969.
The M121 was the first turbocharged BMW engine developed for motor racing. Fast-forward to the present, and the P48 is “more than 50 percent more efficient.” This goes to show what five decades of motorsport can do in terms of research and development.

The auxiliary units such as the starter and generator are not fitted to the engine, but on the transaxle gearbox behind it. The plenum chamber, on the other hand, utilizes CFRP instead of the aluminum weld-and-cast construction from the past.
BMW makes a case for “exceptionally good consumption” of the P48, because similar to Formula 1, the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters limits fuel flow. Drivers exceeding the limit during a race are excluded from the race results.
By comparison, BMW engineers had to find performance as much as possible without increasing the displacement of the M121. This is how BMW started to turbocharge their cars and racing cars, and the 2002 TI is much obliged to hit 240 km/h thanks to forced induction.
Class 1 regulations in DTM replace the previous V8 engines with four-cylinder turbo power plants. In the case of the M4 DTM, the P48 weighs in at 85 kilograms, an exceptional achievement considering that BMW managed to half the displacement while finding more power and superior efficiency.
The number of cylinders and displacement are the same compared to the original BMW 2002 Turbo, but power output has more than doubled.
The BMW 2002 Turbo was, in its time, a masterpiece at the cusp of technological innovation. In the world of motorsports, it featured BMW’s very first turbocharged engine—the M121—all the way back in 1969. Fifty years later, BMW is getting ready to unveil its brand new P48 engine to the world, and while they may share the same bloodline, the technology found in the company’s most recent racing power plant shows just how much engine development has progressed.
Both the M121 and P48 are built on the same principle: a turbocharged, fuel injected, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine designed for the race track. and while the engines may look alike, they are different in essence.
Back in 1969, the M121 was the epitome of a modern engine. The all-aluminum head and block were sand-casted and built to handle all 14.2 PSI of boost pressure thrown at it. The result was a platform which could produce 280 horsepower at 6,500 rpm, a staggering number at the time for such a small engine. BMW says that the turbo fitted to the motor was capable of delivering more than 25.5 PSI of sustained forced-air into the motor; however, it was dialed down to ensure that the motor didn’t lift the head.
Enter BMW’s new P48 engine, a motor five decades in the making. While maintaining the same number of cylinders and displacement, the engineering put into it makes for a marvel of sophisticated German engineering. The 600-horsepower unit revs to an ear-shredding 9,500 rpm and can support more than 36 pounds of boost from its turbocharger with ease. Its fuel system is still mechanically operated, albeit now direct-injected, and its oiling re-engineered into a proper dry-sump setup.
BMW also says that longevity was an important factor when building the P48. The automaker expects the engine to last just over 3,700 miles between rebuilds, meaning that about 1.5 engines will be consumed during the course of a race season.
Sometimes, it’s important to look back at our roots and compare where we came from. BMW is doing just that as it shows the world the P48 without downplaying the influence that the M121 had on modern BMW cars as a whole. Now we sit back and wait to see what the next 50 years hold.

• The application’s turbocharger flows roughly 400 liters of air per second, nearly 3,500 times what a human can breathe.
• The water pump flows 18,000 liters of coolant per hour, enough to fill an entire bathtub in 20 seconds.

More than 2,000 parts make up the entire assembly of the engine. If laid out side-by-side, the parts would cover the floor of a 2,690-square-foot apartment.

Established in May 1972 with 35 employees, it grew to 400 employees by 1988, and is currently an integral part of BMW’s market presence. The first racing project was BMW’s 3.0 CSL.
After the success of BMW M products like BMW 3.0 CSL in racing venues and the growing market for high performance sports cars, M introduced cars for sale to the public. The first official M-badged car for sale to the public was the M1, revealed at the Paris Motor Show in 1978. The M1, however, was more of a racecar in domestic trim than an everyday driver. The direction of the M cars changed with the 1979 release of the M535i, which was a high performance version of BMW’s popular 5 Series mid-size sedan.
In 1993 BMW Motorsport GmbH changed their name to BMW M GmbH.

At present, BMW M has offered modified versions of nearly every BMW nameplate, except for the Z1, 7 Series flagship luxury sedan and the X1 and X3 compact crossover SUVs. There is no BMW M version of the 7 Series, as BMW did not want its flagship saloon to be powered by a high-revving engine, and as the recent top-performing versions (usually the BMW 760Li) have V12 engines which while powerful are considered too heavy for a sporty offshoot. So far the unofficial “BMW M7” is the Alpina B7, which is produced on BMW’s assembly line though its engine and finishing touches are done by auto tuner Alpina. However, as BMW M shifted to turbocharged engines, there are rumors that there is an in-house BMW M7 in the works, and it is speculated that its performance may exceed that of the BMW 760Li and Alpina B7.
The BMW X5 and X6 sport activity vehicles received M derivatives for the 2010 model year onwards. These are the first M vehicles with xDrive four-wheel drive and automatic transmissions, and also the first M-badged SUV models. However, the E70 and E71 X5 and X6 M were actually developed by BMW Group rather than by BMW M.
Although these are considered the most well-known in-house tuning divisions, BMW M has a considerably different philosophy than Mercedes-AMG. BMW M has emphasized tuning only vehicles with “Lateral agility” (which has long been the 3 Series, 5 Series, and roadsters), while AMG has created high-performance versions of many of its nameplates, including flagship sedans and SUVs. Accordingly, “an M car has to be responsive and fundamentally keen on turning as well as accelerating. The M5’s technical spec is all about connecting the driver to a car that reacts blindingly fast, whatever request the driver hands down.” Until the 2010 model year, BMW M has also never used supercharging or turbocharging, unlike Mercedes-AMG or Audi; for instance the E39 and E60 iterations of the BMW M5 (using naturally-aspirated engines) competed against the Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG (with a supercharged V8) and the Audi RS6 (twin-turbo).
BMW M vehicles typically used manuals and semi-automatic transmissions (the most recent type being a dual clutch transmission), in contrast to Mercedes-AMG which largely has automatic transmissions (the 7-speed AMG SpeedShift MCT dual clutch transmission was used on new models from 2009 onward). However, the BMW X5 M and X6 M were the first M-vehicles offered with automatic transmission, a 6-speed Steptronic unit, since this works with xDrive.

* * * International regulations during the late 2000s trends on reducing CO2 emissions and fuel consumption are cited as the reasons not to continue further development on naturally aspirated high redline engines. The N54 twin-turbo inline-6 which debuted in the 2007 BMW 335i (E90) gives almost equivalent performance to the E46 and E90 iterations of the BMW M3, while being much more practical and fuel-efficient as a daily driver. Starting with the X5 M and X6 M, and featured in the F10 M5, BMW used the twin-turbocharged S63 which not only produces more horsepower and torque, but is also more efficient than the S85 V10. Also unlike the S85 and S65 which do not share a design with non-M BMW engines, the S63 has significant parts commonality with the base N63 V8 engine (which is also has twin turbochargers) making them less expensive to build. In 2012, BMW had not considered supercharging yet.
As of the 2013 model year, the BMW M3 (E92/E93) was the only “traditional” M car left, as the rest of the M lineup features turbocharged engines, and the next iteration of the M3 (F80) and M4 (F82/F83) featured a twin turbo straight-6 engine.
M-Cars vs. M-badged cars

* * * There are several BMW models which BMW Motorsport made changes on, without them becoming M-Cars. This succession of styling (M-tech I, M-tech II) and performance cues came from BMW Motorsports; e.g. BMW 530i M packet or 325i M packet etc.
Vehicles which have been modified by BMW Motorsport, but are not full M Cars, may feature “M” badges, whilst full M Cars will have “M” badges with the model number (e.g., “M4” or “M5”). Two exceptions would be the M Roadster and M Coupe models, both Z3, Z4 and 1 Series variants, which only have an “M” badge with no number displayed on the trunk. These cars are full M Cars.
In recent years, there have been ‘M’-badged accessories available on BMW’s standard fleet as factory options or as part of the “M Sport” package (which is more expensive than the optional Sport package). Examples of this include the E39 and E60 5 series sedans which had optional aerodynamic packages that were strongly influenced by the M5’s styling (for example, bumpers with larger intakes). It is not unusual to see “standard” BMW vehicles with “M” badges or ribbons accenting their design. The plain motorsports badge simply stands for the ‘M-tech’ upgrades equipped on the vehicle (e.g., suspension, brakes, looks or any other modification that has been developed by the M division), therefore the ‘M’ badge on these vehicles should not be confused with the true ‘M’ vehicles (except the Z-cars, as mentioned), as they are not fully fledged ‘M’ cars, just equipped with ‘M’-tech upgrades. BMW has offered these ‘M’ options on their standard vehicles since the late 1970s which explains why these vehicles carry ‘M’ badges straight from the factory. In comparison, vehicle maker Audi also employs this same type of nomenclature. There are fully fledged ‘S’ models (S4, S5, S6, S7 and TTS), as well as an optional “S’-line package that can be equipped to their standard vehicle lineup.

An example of ‘M’-badged vehicles in recent times include the E60 BMW 550i and E63 BMW 650i. The standard BMW 5 Series and 6 Series only had a choice of either a manual or automatic transmission, but the ‘M’ Sport package had an optional Sequential Sport Gearbox (SSG) (a gearbox similar to M5 and M6 (SMG) until after the 2007 model year.
M Performance models
In 2012 BMW introduced a new category for ‘M’ cars, which was branded as the ‘M’ Performance. They are the first M diesel cars that BMW produces.
To date this includes the M550d in touring and saloon variants, the X6 M50d and X5 M50d which all share a 381 bhp 740NM triple turbo diesel engine, the former pair are only LHD drive markets currently due to the xDrive layout in the F10 series not being compatible with RHD markets (a RWD F10 M550d was mentioned by Auto Express but has not been confirmed). Official figures put the M550d xDrive’s 0-to-62-mph time at 4.7 seconds and top speed at 155mph (limited).The first petrol M Performance car is the M135i which is a 320 bhp 1 series car. M135i is available with rear- or all-wheel drive.

The M550d is available in both sedan and touring chassis, with a ZF 8HP eight-speed sport automatic transmission including auto start/stop function. Manual and non-sport automatic gearboxes are not available. Unique features on the M550d are the twin trapezoidal exhausts in dark chrome and both wing mirrors and air-intake bars in ferric grey. Other 5 series models have wing mirrors in the same color as the rest of the vehicle. The front fog lamps, standard on all other F10/F11 5 series models are removed, to make space for additional air-intakes. The door-sill plates are also unique on this vehicle, having an “M550d” inscription. In addition, the F11 Touring model features air suspension on the rear axle, with automatic self-levelling.
Nothing yet has been announced as regards the F30 3 Series M Performance line up but BMW have trademarked (amongst many other monikers) M335, M340 and M350. Further to this M President Friedrich Nitschke has confirmed that the new triple turbo diesel engine will “easily fit” within the F30 engine bay but did not elaborate any further.
Nomenclature exceptions

• The 2010 X5 and X6-based M vehicles bore their normal model designations followed by the “M” stripe badge (the X5 M and X6 M). Had the nomenclatures followed tradition, the vehicles would have an MX5 and MX6 model designation, already used by Mazda.
• The Z3/Z4-based M Roadster and M Coupe bore numberless “M” badges as standard fitment.
• The M635CSi followed the M535i naming tradition but was a fully-fledged M-Car (the M6).
• The BMW 1 Series-based M vehicle is called the BMW 1M Coupe to avoid confusion with the original BMW M1.

Competition

In contrast to aftermarket tuners, Alpina BMW-based automobiles are currently mostly built by BMW on its production lines and are more comfort-oriented. The automaker produced only one example of La Voiture Noire to celebrate Bugatti’s 110th anniversary.
According to the company, the six-tailpipe “hypercar” is equipped with an eight-liter engine that has 16 cylinders and 1500 brake horse power. The new vehicle is reportedly a homage to Bugatti’s legendary Type 57 SC Atlantic, which was produced in the 1930s.
The company hasn’t revealed the name of buyer who snapped up La Voiture Noire. However, several sources in the industry told CNBC that the luxury auto was purchased by former Volkswagen Group chairman Ferdinand Piech, who is known for his collection of high-performance cars.
According to Bugatti, La Voiture Noire is “more than a modern interpretation” of the old Type 57 SC Atlantic, of which only four units were ever produced. The Type 57 SC Atlantic is seen as the most famous work of Jean Bugatti, the son of the company’s founder, Ettore Bugatti.

Automobiles Ettore Bugatti was a French car manufacturer of high-performance automobiles, founded in 1909 in the then-German city of Molsheim, Alsace by the Italian-born industrial designer Ettore Bugatti. The cars were known for their design beauty and for their many race victories. Famous Bugattis include the Type 35 Grand Prix cars, the Type 41 “Royale”, the Type 57 “Atlantic” and the Type 55 sports car.

In Australia and New Zealand, the D-Max was sold as the third generation Holden Rodeo (RA) between 2003 and 2008, before being facelifted into the form of the Holden Colorado. This was a result of the GM-Isuzu split resulting in GM losing the right to use the “Rodeo” name. As with Rodeo, Colorado is available as either two- or four-wheel drive and in a range of body styles including single cab, space cab and crew cab. Power is provided by a range of petrol and diesel engines. Of the petrol engines, Holden offers a 2.4-litre four-cylinder as well as the Australian-made 3.6-litre Alloytec engine. The diesel powerplant is a four-cylinder Isuzu 4JJ1 unit displacing 3.0 litres. The main difference between the Colorado and the Rodeo is the revised body work from the A-pillar forward.

In the third quarter of 2006, the D-Max received a minor redesign and the introduction of a third DDi iTEQ engine, 3.0 4JJ1-TCX. This engine is a modified 4JJ1-TC, incorporating a new Variable Valve Geometry Turbo (VGS). The extra power warranted an introduction of new transmissions as well: the MUX 5-Speed manual and MaxMatic-III automatic transmission. Julie Beamer, director of GM Chile, announced on 5 March 2008 to workers of the only remaining automobile factory in Chile, that said factory would be closed down on 31 July that year. The only vehicle that was in production at the time was the Chevrolet D-Max. The announcement came shortly after then-president of Venezuela Hugo Chávez reduced the import quota for cars in Venezuela, the main export market for the Chilean-made Chevrolet D-Max, but GM Chile said in its official statement that the reason behind the end of production in Arica was the lack of favorable conditions for vehicle manufacturing in Chile and fierce competition from many other car manufacturers and countries on Chile’s car market.

The Thai-market Colorado is smaller than the North American model of the same name and almost unrelated. In late January 2006, Chevrolet introduced a G-80 differential lock system as optional for most Colorado trim levels. This feature is not available on the D-Max. The Thai-market Colorado received a minor redesign in late 2007.
Late first quarter of 2008, Chevrolet also introduced Colorado 4×2 2.5 with diesel dual fuel system via CNG tank. Switchable between diesel (65) and compressed natural gas (35) as the divided aspect (65:35); moreover also can use diesel purely as well. Biodiesel B5 is also acceptable. Location of tank is on the bed behind cab. Available for two cab styles.
In March 2011, Chevrolet revealed the prototype version of all-new Colorado at Bangkok Motor Show, not related anymore to D-Max, shown as Extended cab with rear access system, and some of high-tech equipment, In June 2011, Chevrolet revealed crew cab in adventure concept at Buenos Aires, Argentina (this car also shown at Frankfurt Auto Show in September 2011), and in July 2011, a Holden version of crew-cab version concept car got its premiere at Australian International Motor Show, but the interior of this car looked like production models any more than 2 concepts before.
On 9 September 2011, General Motors (Thailand) opened the diesel engine manufacture plant, to make the “Duramax” engine, as the VM Motori rebadge engine (same as old 2-liter diesel Captiva) with 2.5- or 2.8-liter, manual and automatic, 2WD or 4WD. New 2012 Isuzu D-MAX Pickup Truck is the Chevy Colorado’s Asian Twin.
Isuzu has long abandoned the U.S. passenger and truck market but it continues to have strong ties with General Motors, which was once its primary stockholder. In 2011, the Japanese automaker revealed its all-new D-MAX pickup truck, which was designed in cooperation with GM and is a sister model to the 2012 Chevrolet Colorado. Albeit on separate occasions, both pickup truck models were presented in Thailand. On the outside, the new 2012 D-MAX features different front and rear end styling treatments as well as bespoke trim parts, while inside, the changes over the Colorado are limited to the color options and the instrument panel. Isuzu’s iTEQ engine has been retained but has been tuned up. 2500 cc engine now comes in two configurations; normal turbo 87 kW power with 280Nm of torque and 101 kW of power and VGS Turbo with 320Nm of torque. If you want more power you can opt for four-cylinder 3000 cc 4JJ1-TC iTEQ common-rail diesel engine with VGS Turbo which now has the power of 132 kW with 380Nm of torque. Engines performance have been upgraded with Variable geometry turbocharger (VGS Turbo) and Isuzu Dmax’s engines pass Euro V emission standard. 2012 Dmax still comes with 5-speed manual but has unvelied new 5-speed “Rev-Tronic” automatic transmission with sport mode (2011 model had 4 speed automatic transmission). 4WD models have been renamed from “Rodeo” to “V-Cross”, and transfer case has been renamed from “Touch-on-the-fly” button to new “Terrain command” system that uses spin system to allow for seamless changing of drive modes from 4-Wheel to 2-Wheel Drive mode. Isuzu front suspension made up of independent double wishbone with coil-spring setup and a rear suspension made up of over slung leaf-springs installed above a special long span rear axle make for a comfortable driving experience. Ecuador is the only country where this generation D-Max is available with a gasoline engine, an Opel-based C24 with 16 valves and double overhead camshafts supplied from Brazil where the lower-grade versions of the Chevrolet S10 still rely on a flex-fuel 8-valve SOHC version which also served as a basis for the Vortec 2400 industrial engine.
Isuzu new rugged ladder-frame chassis platform dubbed “i-GRIP” (Isuzu Gravity Responsive Intelligent Platform) underpinning the new D-Max makes 42% stronger than its predecessors leading to improved ride and handling. The frame includes improved cross bracing at the rear, improving stability under loads and while towing, while also “ensuring long-term durability when used regularly in harsh environments”. Longer wheelbase of 3095mm – 45mm longer than before – is now standard on all three body styles. This is good news for double cab users as rear riders not only get more leg space but also more comfortable seats.
D-Max would continue to be offered in all three body styles: Single Cab, Space Cab and Crew Cab. Customers will also continue to have a choice of rear-wheel drive 4×2 and four-wheel drive 4×4 models. Space Extra Cab has laterally opening door to give easier access to the rear seat. Isuzu D-Max has an advanced safety package, with features including high-tensile steel, electronic stability control ESC, traction control (TCS), ABS, emergency brake assist, a number of airbags and Electronic brakeforce distribution EBD. EBD detects the payload weight and modulates the rear braking force to compensate. In ESC fitted models ABS now goes to 4-channel 4-sensor type instead of the current 3-channel 4-sensor.

The D-Max gets more storage spaces. Isuzu Entertainment System includes eight speaker comprising two large 6 x 9-inch front speakers and a roof-mounted Exciter speaker sound system replete with surround sound in the newly designed dash along with ‘iGENIE’ navigation system which include support for real-time traffic reports, and is equipped with standard Bluetooth and portable music player connectivity. It also comes with comfortable Flex-Ride suspension system; 2-DIN audio-video head unit with navigation-ready system; projector-type headlamps that provide 14% more illumination than their ordinary counterparts; side-impact steel beams; and rear camera and sensor.

The Dodge Durango occupies a sweet spot in the SUV world. On one hand, it has the capabilities of a large people-hauling crossover with three rows of seats. On the other, it’s a durable unibody SUV with the towing abilities you’d expect of a full-size truck. And for 2019, it has been improved in several ways to enhance its self-proclaimed position as “the Dodge Charger of the three-row SUV segment.”
What’s New for 2019?
There are five Durango models for 2019: the SXT, GT, Citadel, R/T and SRT.
The entry-level Durango SXT, powered by a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 with 295 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, is rated to tow a 6,200-pound trailer. For 2019, the SXT has a customizable 7-inch full digital infotainment display, pushbutton start, Uconnect 4 and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. While a leather-wrapped steering wheel is standard on the SXT, leather-covered seats are newly optional.
Another V6 Durango, the GT, receives a new look for 2019, courtesy of the front fascia and LED foglamps from the sporty R/T and SRT models. More significant: The functional SRT hood, which features a center duct flanked by two heat extractors, is now optional on the 2019 Dodge Durango GT. Other options on the 7-seat GT include paddle shifters, a power liftgate, Capri leather-trimmed seats (with suede inserts) and heat for the leather-wrapped sport steering wheel and first two rows of seats.
The Durango Citadel can be ordered with the 360-horsepower, 5.7-liter Hemi V8, which saves fuel via automatic cylinder deactivation on the highway but still endows this Dodge SUV with an impressive tow rating of 7,400 pounds. For 2019, the Citadel has standard second-row captain’s chairs, plus an optional 825-watt Harman Kardon sound system with 19 speakers (for those times when 18 isn’t enough). The Citadel, with 20-inch polished aluminum wheels, also has HID headlamps and an 8.4-inch touch screen.
The 2019 Dodge Durango R/T continues to be powered by Chrysler’s 5.7-liter Hemi V8, which is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. This R/T, which shares its aggressive front fascia with the SRT (and 2019 Citadel), has performance-tuned suspension and brakes, as well as HID headlights and 7-passenger seating with second-row captain’s chairs. The 2019 Durango R/T also is available with Sepia leather seats and the powerful Harman Kardon audio system.

Firmly ensconced at the top of the Durango performance heap is the 2019 SRT, which continues to be powered by a 392 cubic-inch V8 with 475 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. For an idea of just how potent this Durango is, consider this: the SRT hits 60 mph in 4.4 seconds and blasts through the quarter mile in 12.9 seconds.

While red seatbelts are now available as fun eye candy inside the 2019 Dodge Durango SRT, far more significant are the available upgraded Brembo brakes with two-piece rotors. While the stock Brembos are up the task of slowing this 5,500-pound all-wheel-drive SUV with confidence, the optional brakes are better able to handle the high loads this SUV can produce, given its performance-tuned suspension with stiffer springs, larger sway bars and active damping.
Inside, the Durango SRT is fitted with Performance Laguna leather, carbon-fiber trim on the instrument panel and attractive suede on the headliner and A-pillars. Additionally, it has a flat-bottom steering wheel, paddle shifters and seats embossed with SRT logos.
The 2019 Dodge Durango goes on sale this fall, with a starting price of $29,995, excluding destination. While the other prices aren’t known at this time, we do know this: All 2019 Durangos, rear-drive or all-wheel-drive, will be fitted with an integrated trailer brake when ordered with the optional Trailer Tow Package. Also, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-path detection is now optional. Lastly, when the 2019 Dodge Durango leaves the Detroit, Michigan, assembly plant, it will be available in 11 colors, three of which are new: F8 Green, Destroyer Gray and Reactor Blue.

The Acura Precision Concept model made its world debut at the 2016 North American International Auto Show today, pointing toward a bolder, more distinctive future for Acura vehicle design. The Acura Precision Concept was developed by the Acura Design Studio in California to express the Acura brand DNA of “Precision Crafted Performance.”
“There is no more clear promise for the Acura brand than Precision Crafted Performance,” said Jon Ikeda, vice president and general manager of Acura. “We’re committed to infusing this core Acura promise into every facet of our products and every aspect of our relationship with the customer.”

With an emphasis on high-contrast details and the intersection of modern, sheer surfaces and muscular, organic sculpting, the Acura Precision Concept communicates Acura’s focus on performance and prestige through its ultra-low and wide stance, long dash-to-axle ratio, deeply sculpted surfaces and the debut of a new Diamond Pentagon grille.
“The Acura Precision Concept is more than simply a concept vehicle, it is a design study model that literally will shape the direction of all future Acura products around our Precision Crafted Performance DNA,” said Dave Marek, Acura global creative director. “The Acura Precision Concept is the leading edge of a renewed commitment to delivering Precision Crafted Performance in every facet of the product experience and creating a powerful and very exciting direction for the next generation of Acura models.”
The Acura Precision Concept’s crouched and athletic stance is further emphasized by its deeply sculpted side surfaces pouring over swelling rear wheel arches covering 22-inch wheels and tires. The forward-looking concept also features signature lighting designs – in front with its Jewel Constellation LED headlights composed of organically arranged fractal elements, and in back with floating LED taillights.
A key design theme, dubbed “quantum continuum,” is seen in the seamless transition of materials and structure from the exterior to the interior of the vehicle, which is further highlighted by the absence of a b-pillar. The large door rocker panel flows into the interior side sill, transitioning into a cantilever for the floating rear seats. The rear center high-mounted stoplight becomes an architecture element piercing the rear glass and then flowing down to help form the structure for the metal airfoil shape of the rear headrests.
The elegant and powerful exterior is matched by its dramatic interior design, where cantilevered surfaces meet with striking tones, expressive surfacing and modern detailing. Of particular note are the double-layered instrument panel, the high-contrast front seat surfaces, the ultra-thin “floating” rear seats, evoking the look of modern lounge furniture, and the hand-crafted audio speaker grilles made of exotic wood.
The driver’s space is highlighted by a compact, race-inspired, sports steering wheel with paddle shifters and Integrated Dynamics System (IDS) controls, a floating center meter, a driver’s head-up display, a cantilevered center stack and an ultra-wide, thin and curved center display screen.
New Acura HMI Concept
The Acura Precision Concept also explores a new approach for Acura’s digital human-machine interface (HMI), enabling a more intuitive, advanced and seamless connection between man and machine. The ultra-wide and curved center screen is operated by a floating touch pad suspended on the cantilevered center stack. Upon entry, the system scans each occupant and selects personalized features and functions, including maps, audio and customized vehicle performance settings.

The concept was created by Acura’s California Design Studio under the direction of Acura global creative director, Dave Marek. The exterior design was led by Michelle Christensen, principal exterior designer, with the interior design created under the leadership of John Norman, principal interior designer. Both Christensen and Norman also played a key role in the creation of the next-generation Acura NSX supercar.

Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, powered by a 2.9 V6 bi-turbo petrol engine delivering 375 kW (510 bhp), won the import class of the category ‘Standard Sedans/Station Wagons up to 100,000 euro’. Alfa Romeo Giulia Veloce, having a 206 kW (280 bhp) turbo petrol engine 2.0 under its bonnet, was rated number one import car of the category ‘Standard Sedans/Station Wagons up to 50,000 euro’ by the readers of ‘sport auto’ magazine.
